Việc phát triển và sử dụng dứt khoát chữ viết quốc ngữ theo mẫu tự latinh để chuyển âm tiếng Việt đã đạt mục tiêu mang lại những thành quả tích cực trong nỗ lực thăng tiến văn hóa và kiến thức cho dân chúng. Chữ quốc ngữ thay cho chữ nôm và chữ hán, đã đóng góp hữu hiệu vào việc canh tân xứ sở, nâng cao dân trí ; và cũng nhờ quốc ngữ mà người dân nước này đã đạt được một tỉ lệ biết chữ tương đối cao.

Trong khuôn khổ ngữ học, việc phát triển chữ quốc ngữ bấy lâu nay thường được xem là công trình hàng đầu của một nhà truyền giáo người Pháp đến Việt Nam vào thế kỷ XVII, Alexandre de Rhodes (giáo sĩ Ðắc-Lộ). Nhưng những nghiên cứu của sách nầy cho thấy sở dĩ công trình của giáo sĩ Ðắc-Lộ thực hiện được là nhờ những nỗ lực khai phá của các nhà truyền giáo và ngữ học người Bồ Ðào Nha đến trước ông.

Dựa vào những tài liệu bằng tiếng latinh và các thư từ liên lạc bằng tiếng Bồ Ðào Nha được viết ra trong thế kỷ XVII, đến nay chưa xuất bản, tác giả nêu lên vai trò trụ cột của các giáo sĩ Bồ-Ðào-Nha trong việc phát triển chữ viết. Tiếp đó, tác giả giải thích nhiều tương-hợp ly kỳ giữa chữ quốc ngữ và chữ viết Bồ-Ðào-Nha.

The development and eventual official adoption of a Romanized script (“Quoc Ngu” or “national language”) to represent the spoken language of Vietnam has had enormous impact on that country’s cultural and intellectual development. Replacing an older script based on Chinese style ideograms, the inherent efficiency of Quoc Ngu has been a major contributor to Vietnam’s comparatively high literacy rate, and thus to the country’s modernization.

In linguistic circles, the development of Quoc Ngu has long been attributed primarily to the efforts of a 17^th century French missionary to Vietnam, Alexandre de Rhodes. The present study, however, demonstrates that de Rhodes’ accomplishment was made possible by his building upon a foundation of the work of the Portuguese missionaries and linguists who preceded him.

Drawing on previously unpublished 17^th century works in Latin and contemporary correspondence in Portuguese, the author demonstrates the pivotal role played by Portuguese clerics in the development of the script. In doing so, he also explains the many fascinating synergies between Quoc Ngu and written Portuguese.

An original and important new work on Vietnamese linguistics, this book is of interest not only to scholars of Asian languages, but also to all with interest, either professional or lay, in the history of medieval Vietnam and its development into the modern state.

This book includes:

1. A historical overview of the work of the early Jesuit missionaries in Vietnam in the field of linguistics (English and French).

2. A critical edition with explanatory notes of the letter of Pina (English and French).

3. A critical edition with explanatory notes of the manuscript Manuductio ad Linguam Tunckinensem, systematically compared to the Grammar published by Alexandre of Rhodes together with his Dictionary (English and French).

4. A phonetic analysis of the Vietnamese language in reference to Portuguese phonetics, on the basis of the Manuductio and De Rhodes’ Grammar (French only).

Le développement et l’adoption définitive de l’écriture romaine (« quôc ngu » ou « langue nationale ») pour représenter la langue parlée du Viêt-nam eurent un impact conséquent sur l’évolution culturelle et intellectuelle du pays.

En remplaçant une écriture ancienne fondée sur des idéogrammes de type chinois, le quôc ngu, grâce à son efficacité, contribua de manière importante à la modernisation du pays qui a pu ainsi atteindre un taux d’alphabétisation relativement élevé.

Dans les cercles linguistiques, le développement du quôc ngu a longtemps été attribué en premier lieu à un missionnaire français installé au Viêt-nam au XVII^e siècle, Alexandre de Rhodes. L’étude présente, cependant, démontre que l’œuvre d’Alexandre de Rhodes fut rendue possible grâce aux travaux préalables de missionnaires et de linguistes portugais qui l’avaient précédé.

À partir de travaux en latin et de correspondance en portugais datant du XVII^e siècle et non publiés à ce jour, l’auteur démontre le rôle central joué par les ecclésiastiques portugais dans le développement de l’écriture. Ainsi, il explique de nombreuses et fascinantes synergies entre le quoc ngu et le portugais écrit.

Œuvre originale et nouvelle sur la linguistique vietnamienne, ce livre attirera non seulement les érudits en langues orientales, mais encore tous ceux, professionnels ou curieux, qui portent un intérêt à l’histoire du Viêt-nam médiéval et à son développement vers l’état moderne.
