Little Saigon, CA 5-1-2005 Xuân Vũ TRẦN Đ̀NH NGỌC |

Alas Tsunamis left all miseries!
Being held by her grandma, the one-year-old girl is crying so much that she is almost unconcious because she misses her mother. Her four-year-old brother is also crying, clinging to his grandma. They want their mother – they want their father. They don’t know where their parents went and why they don’t come back, It’s afternoon - it’s late afternoon - then the dusk is coming. The old woman and two children don’t have anything to eat, nor to drink. The baby girl is craving a full breast of milk from her mother that she gave to her everyday at this time, The boy usually has a loaf of bread or a bowl of rice with some pieces of vegetables or fish. They’re so hungry, thirsty and miserable – They’re missing their parents so much. They’re crying all the time without stopping. Their grandma is also crying, holding them under the dark gray sky with light shower. She is standing on the beach in front of her son’s house looking into the foggy, vast sea. She is looking for her son and his wife who have gone this morning without reason and destination. They did not come back causing their two children missing, hungry and thirsty. The old woman feels pity for her grandchildren in this situation. And she feels pity for herself, too. The facts appeared under her eyes are her son’s house was destroyed completely. It left no trace. Thousands and thousands of houses in this city were also destroyed and they left no trace at all. A hundred thousand people have been taken to the sea this morning. Some small children don’t have grandmas to be held and embraced. Since their relatives were all dead. Their fathers and mothers, grandparents, brothers and sisters were all dead. They are abandoned to cry on the pavement of the road leading to the sea. They are so hungry, thirsty and miserable. Thousands and thousands of children like that in the morning of December 26, 2004 when the ferocious tsunamis wiped out the whole region of South Asia in the sea of India. The power derived from a very strong 9.0 earthquake starting from the coastal city, Banda Aceh, Indonesia. It swept along over four thousand miles around the archipalago Sumatra, through Sri Lanka to come to Phuket, Thailand There were totally eleven countries which have been damaged by tsunamis. They were India, Somalia, Maldives, Malaysia, Bangladesh... Cadavers were everywhere Some laid on their bellies but some on their backs, Some were grasping the roots of coconut trees. Some were hung up on the branches of the uprooted jaracandas. Most of them were swept away to the ocean, then swept back to the shore, On the devastated beach of Sri Lanka, a woman is mourning her lovely husband and five children. Her family was swept away to the ocean, and so was her own house. Her parents, brothers and sisters were all gone in a few minutes, and so were her friends, relatives and neighbors. There is everything on the beach, from the open sea to the coconut trees that were proudly standing previously. Now no more! They’re all gone! Cabinets, beds, cars, cookers, clothes, furniture and plenty of other things are on the street. At this corner, some people are weeping miserably, Some are frightened out of their wits. The terrible pictures show in their eyes, Some are going back and forth with embarrassment. Some are so weary that there is no more way to live. It’s really a Hell! It’s really a view that we have never seen. What a terrible devastation! What an evil destruction from the starting of the human history! The sea water attacked and destroyed all the drinking water wells. It penetrated through the debris, and so did the blood and the tears. The people in the region are so miserable and weary about their human’s destiny. It’s so evil and unfortunate. There are no more foods, There is no more drinking water, There are no more medications and clothes. There are no more relatives and money. Some people are so desperate that they want to commit suicide. They think they’ll just go to the sea and put themselves at the bottom of the sea. To follow their beloved people, To make their lives ending easily. One generation was lost. Two generations were lost, too.. While one fourth of the victims are children. There are totally two hundred thousand victims , not including thousands of missing. We don’t know where they have gone. Or were they foods for ocean fish? There are five million of homeless people. The sky is their mosquito-net and the ground is their mattress. The next day of the tsunamis, the people are suffering from the terrible odor of cadavers. The governments use mass graves to bury victims. They are exhausted and overwhelmed; they don’t have enough coffins. The people around the world and the United Nations have tried their best; four billions dollars donation in ten days. Medications, foods, tents, water and other necessary things come urgently to the refugee camps. The rescuers use hundreds of planes, helicopters, and even war ships with thousands and thousands of troops and volunteers to go to the damaged regions to help. They are striving to spread their charitable hands to console the victims. They want to share their unimaginable pain, so the suvivors can re-start their new lives. Suvivors should forget all the miseries and evil things from the tsunamis. The reconstruction, however, is not just days. It’s not just one year or five years. It will take decades. And the financing will take billions of dollars to achieve. We believe some day, the reconstruction will be okayed, but the spiritual and mental loss will be a nightmare for a thousand years. For the miserable victims as well as survivors, For their relatives, friends, and neighbors as well as the whole archipalago in Indian Sea.
I am writing this poem as I light a perfumed incense to remember all the victims. The tsunamis have destroyed brutally, Alas! It has left uncounted miseries! Little Saigon, CA Jan. 5th, 2005 Xuan Vu TRAN DINH NGOC
